2005 Telstra Art Award

Muk Muk Aboriginal Art is proud to be associated with Evelyn Pultara's winning Entry in the 2005 Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award - General Painting Section.

“Yam Dreaming”, is Evelyn’s depiction of the bush yam which is an important food source for Evelyn’s people. The bush yam is similar to that of a sweet potato which is collected by the women and cooked in hot coals. She portrays the bush yam in both a linear style and a more abstract style which she developed.

The judges describe Evelyn’s linear style of artwork as “a striking, vibrant and luminous works that shimmers in its representation of a dreaming of significance to the Willora community. But it is also easily read as a modern painting, able to be understood independently of its rich and specific cultural inspiration”.

The Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award is an important showcase for both established and emerging artists and has come to be regarded as the premier national event in the Australian indigenous art calendar.

Evelyn Pultara is an outstanding artist from the Utopia area, north of Alice Springs. She was born in 1938 at Woodgreen Station and is related to famous artists Emily Kame Kngwarreye. She is an Anmatyerre woman and is the mother of six children.
