About us

A small family owned and operated Territory business Muk Muk Aboriginal Art is managed by Mike Mitchell and his wife Sharon.

Working in Aboriginal communities for over 25 years Mike has developed a passion for Aboriginal people, their culture and their art.

It is this passion that resulted in the creation of Muk Muk Aboriginal Art to help share Aboriginal culture and artwork with the rest of the world.

The name “Muk Muk” is for the word – Night Owl – from the Alawa language in central Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. It was a common theme in the paintings of Rover Thomas and Barney Ellaga.

Operating since 1996, Muk Muk Aboriginal Art is located in the heart of Central Australia in Alice Springs. Muk Muk Aboriginal Art pride itself on the ability to supply artworks around the world and have an international reputation for sourcing the finest Aboriginal art.

Muk Muk Aboriginal Art actively works to promote established and emerging artists. We assist galleries to curate exhibitions including the attendance of artists where possible. Our works are collected by corporations, museums and private collectors.

A member of the Australian Indigenous Art Trade Association (Art.Trade) Muk Muk Aboriginal Art undertakes the commitment to an ethical code of practice that supports Aboriginal artists and enhances the Aboriginal art industry.

Muk Muk Aboriginal Art is founded on strong working relationships with all of its clients. We work directly with the artists providing them a venue when they come into town where they can come and paint. Only materials of the best quality possible are supplied to the artists ensuring an ongoing guarantee of the quality of each painting.

Provenance Guarantee

Each work is purchased directly from the artist. All works are paid for in full at the time of completion; they are catalogued and digital images are taken for each painting. We sit with the artist to learn about the story of the painting, where it originated and its meaning to the artist and their family. We work to maintain the most up to date artist biographies, including extensive research to ensure that all exhibitions, collections and artist events are recorded.

When a painting is sold it is represented by this complete documentation and authenticated provenance.
